Poker online is a card game in which players wager chips on the outcome of a hand. It is played with a standard 52-card deck, often including one or two jokers.
Several variants of the game are played, although all share certain essential features and principles. The most common of these is that each hand is comprised of five cards. The value of each hand is in inverse proportion to its frequency, with higher hands winning.
The highest possible hand is a five of a kind, which beats any other hand that has the same number of cards. Other hands can be made with combinations of cards, if allowed by the rules of the game.
Players may act in turn, in clockwise rotation (acting out of turn can negatively affect other players). They must never act on a bet that has already been made.
Before the start of a hand, all players must “ante” an amount (varies by game, our games are a nickel) to contribute to the pot. The dealer shuffles the deck, and then deals the appropriate number of cards to each player in turn.
In each betting interval, the first player to make a bet must either “call” or “raise.” A player who exactly meets the previous bet is said to “call,” and a player who bets more than the last bettor is said to “raise.”
If no player raises in that betting interval, the player may check; this is sometimes called sandbagging. The betting interval ends when the last bet is made or when all players have checked.
A player may also fold, which means they put no chips into the pot and discard their hand. They can do this by either surrendering their cards, or by tapping the table and saying “fold.”
When a bet is made, it is usually placed into the center of the table, behind each player. This is done to aid in tracking bets and ensure that each player has placed the correct amount of chips into the pot. Tossing the chips into the pot (known as “splashing the pot”) is often used in film and television depictions of the game. It may confuse other players and can be used to hide the true amount of a bet.
After a bet, other players can then either “call” or “raise.” If the player calls, they must place the same amount of chips into the pot as the previous bettor; if the player raises, they must place more than enough chips into the pot to call.
Some players also may bet “all in.” This is done by placing all of their chips into the pot. This is usually done when a player has a strong hand, and it can be a good strategy to do this.
The only time this is not permitted is when a player’s hand is so weak that the hand would lose if it were to bet all in. If a player has a strong hand and is considering all in, it is always wise to ask other players before doing so.
