Poker involves the use of a set of cards ranked from Ace to King. If you hold two or more cards of the same suit, it is known as a flush. If you hold one card of each suit, it is a straight. If you hold three or more cards of the same rank, it is a full house. These are the best possible hands at any given time.

The basic rules of poker are based on a standard pack of cards, which is shuffled by the dealer. Each player is dealt two cards. The player on the left of the dealer is responsible for posting the small and big blinds. If there is more than one player left in the game, a third pot may be formed, known as a side pot. These pots are used to cover additional money bet by players remaining in the game.

The ante is the bet that is made to start a round. The amount is decided by the table and can range from $1 to $5. If a player decides to raise, he may do so by as much as 14 chips. For example, if there are two four of a kind with the same rank, the player with the high card outside the four of a kind will win. Also, if there are two three of a kind, the player with the high card will win.

The best hand is a “trip” of sevens, which is a hand containing three distinct pairs and a fifth card. A trip isn’t always the best possible hand, however. For example, a pair of kings isn’t bad off the deal, but a full house is the best possible hand. If you’re playing poker in a club, there may be special rules called “house rules” that determine which cards qualify for a trip.

A hand is considered a “full house” if it is made up of two distinct pairs and a fifth card. A straight flush is five cards of the same suit in sequential order. A “backdoor flush” is achieved by hitting a card that is needed on the turn and river.
